The Universal Basic Education Board, Edo State has expressed sadness over the death of a 13-year-old pupil who was swept away by flood, following a recent heavy downpour in the State.

In a statement released by the Chairman of the board, Dr Joan Oviawe, he said she had deployed field officers in the area to unravel the circumstances surrounding the pupil’s death.

“The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board regrets to announce the unfortunate death of Egbadon Overcome, a 13-year-old primary 3 pupil of the Idumu Ague Primary School in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

“We commiserate with the child’s parents and the entire people of Idumu Ague in Uromi over the incident. We will ensure that the issue is thoroughly investigated and work towards ensuring that such does not happen,” it stated.

Miss Egbadon Overcome was a primary 3 pupil of Idumu Ague Primary School in Uromi.

According to sources from the area, the ugly incident was as a result of a heaven downpour. Although the deceased’s body was recovered by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be fully unravelled.

The federal government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has reaffirmed its commitment to achieve gender equality in Nigeria.

This assurance came three days after President Muhammadu Buhari nominated only 7 women in his ministerial list which contained 43 names.

NAIJALOADED reports that the Buhari’s action has been condemned by over 150 Nigerian women groups, representing different regions, ethnicities, social and political allegiances and organizations for youths and persons with disabilities.

In a letter of protest to the Senate, the women expressed dismay and utter disappointment about the male dominated nominations.

It read in part:

“This list maintains and reinforces the historical exclusion of women in the country, ignores the youth and people living with disabilities and thus inhibits the critical goal of achieving meaningful, equitable and participatory national development.

“The list submitted by Mr. President reneges on the repeated campaign promises by his government and creates a crisis of confidence in the integrity of our elected political leadership.

But government insists it would continue to implement women-oriented policies, including the full declaration of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA).

Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Ifeoma Anagbogu made the commitment at the Beijing +25 Inter-Generational Dialogue on Thursday in Abuja.

The BPFA (Beijing Declaration) was adopted in 1995 with commitments to taking strategic and bold actions in 12 critical areas of concern.

The 12 critical areas include poverty, education and training, health, violence, armed conflict, economy, power and decision making.

Others are institutional mechanisms, human rights, media, environment and the girl child.

NAN quoted Anagbogu as saying that BPFA

“affirms that equality between women and men is a matter of human rights and condition for social justice.”

“It is also a necessary and fundmental prerequisite for equality, development and sustainable peace.

“The BPFA remains the most visionary agenda for the empowerment of women and girls; it set out on how to remove systematic barriers that hold women back from equality in both private and public spheres,”

She said.

She stated that there had been tremendous progress toward achieving gender equality and the realisation of the rights of women and girls.

Anagbogu said some of the achievements include institutional arrangements, participation of women in public and political life.

Others integration of gender and social inclusion targets in economic policies, budgets and development frameworks, initiatives to partner with men and boys in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The official, however, listed challenges affecting the realisation of BPFA in Nigeria as gender stereotypes, social norms, cultural barriers and insufficient up-to-date gender disaggregated data.

Others are finding limitations, insecurity and non implementation and passage of some laws and policies, among others.

Moses Okechukwu a 28-year-old man, was on Friday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

Okechukwu, whose address was not disclosed, is facing a three-count charge of rape, sexual assault and trying to escape arrest, to which he pleaded not guilty.

ASP. Akpan Nkem, the Prosecutor, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 15, at No. 2, Chukwuma Close, Jakande, Ajangbadi, Lagos.

According to Nkem, Okechukwu forcefully had sexual intercourse with the girl without her consent.

“The defendant forcefully penetrated the girl’s private part without her consent.

“He also assaulted one Chukwuemeka Okereke while trying to escape arrest,” the prosecutor said.

Ikem said that the offences contravened Sections 168, 258 and 170 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Mr Patrick Adekomiya, the Chief Magistrate, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He then adjourned the case until Aug. 28, for hearing, NAN reports.

The Champions League winners will play in Qatar on 18 and 21 December.

The immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said, he deliberately disobeys some court orders in the interest of the public, according to a report by Punch.

Malami said this while responding to a question by the Senate Minority Leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe, at the ongoing ministerial screening.

The senior advocate was asked why he decides to disobey court orders by refusing to release persons who have been granted bail by competent courts of jurisdiction.

In his reaction, however, Malami said his duty to protect the overall rights of Nigerians overrides the need to respect individual liberties.

The former AGF said indeed Sections 36, 37 and 39 demand the respect for individual liberty but argued that such rights are not absolute.

He subsequently cited a Supreme Court ruling on the Federal Republic of Nigeria VS Asari Dokubo.

“I concede that I have a responsibility as AGF to protect individual rights but looking at the provisions of Section 174 of the constitution, I want to state further that the Office of the AGF is meant to protect public interest and where the individual interests conflicts with the public interest of 180 million Nigerians that are interested in having this country integrated must naturally prevail and I think that position has been stated by the apex court in the case of Asari Dokubo Vs Federal Republic of Nigeria that when an individual interest conflicts with public interest, the public interest will naturally prevail.”

Malami’s response, however, did not go down well with a section of the Senate that insisted that the constitution remains supreme.

In Malami’s defence, however, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, who also hails from Malami’s home state of Kebbi, said the former AGF had answered the questions brilliantly and asked that he allowed to “take a bow”.

Na’Allah argued that other former ministers of President Muhammadu Buhari had not been grilled for up to an hour before and yet Malami was being treated unfairly.

The Senate President, who agreed with Na’Allah, said Malami had answered the questions brilliantly and should be asked to go.

He subsequently asked the former AGF to take a bow after putting the question to a voice vote.

The AGF has come under serious rebuke by several rights groups both locally and internationally for his failure to obey court orders.

The leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky; as well as a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), are some of the persons who have remained in custody for over three years despite being granted bail by courts.

Incidentally, Malami’s position corresponds with that of President Muhammadu Buhari who said at the Nigerian Bar Association conference last year that rule of law can be suspended for the sake of national security.

A man, who molests fellow men sexually while pretending to be a spirit, around Atan area of Ogun State, has been arrested by Operatives of Zone 2, Nigeria Police Force, comprising Lagos and Ogun states commands.

The suspect, Justin Edward, 34, as gathered, usually wore a mask, while perpetrating the act. His modus oparandi included laying ambush for his male targets at strategic points.

When he sees a prey, he comes out of hiding, pretending to be a spirit from the cemetery. Thereafter, he would drag his victim to a convenient place, where he would have sexual intercourse with them.

Zonal spokesman, DSP Hauwa Idris, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect was arrested on July 20, following intelligence report on his escapades.

Idris said:

“ He was found with three facial masks, upon arrest. He confessed to have had sexual intercourse with five men.

The Police spokesman added.

“Investigation is in progress, while efforts are on to get other members of his gang,”

Mrs. Rebbeca Sharibu, mother of the abducted Dapchi secondary schoolgirl Leah Sharibu, is still hopeful about her daughter’s return alive.

Reacting to a video released by Boko Haram where an abducted aid worker, Grace, called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN ) and Action Against Hunger, an International Non-Governmental Organisation working in Borno State, to rescue her before she is “killed like other abductees like Alice and Leah Sharibu”.

According to Mrs. Sharibu, “no matter how long it takes, my hope is still alive that my daughter will come back alive from Boko Haram. I still look forward to that day and I am confident that she will return”.

Mrs. Sharibu revealed that she had not even seen the video in circulation.

She reiterated her call to President Muhammadu Buhari to do everything to rescue her daughter, just as she also appealed to the people holding her daughter in captive to release her unconditionally.

Her words: “I am bothered by the recent silence about my daughter’s case, but I still want to cry to the President. I want our President Buhari to know that my eyes are still wet with tears over my daughter’s abduction. I will continue to cry to him, until my daughter returns to me.

“I also want to still appeal to the people that are holding my daughter to please have mercy on her and release her without any condition. She does not know anything. What has she done to deserve what she is going through?”

Our correspondent, who monitored the video reported that Grace, the only woman in a group of six captives, appeared in a video that was allegedly released by Boko Haram where she called on the authorities to save them from their abductors who she referred to as the “Army of Khalifa”.

The address of Grace in the video as monitored by our reporter reads: “My name is Grace, I work with Action Against Hunger, an NGO in Borno state. My base is in Borno State. We went to work on Thursdays on the 18/7/2019 out of Damasak. On our way going back to Damasak by kinari, Chmbawa ward in Damasak, we were caught by these army called the Khalifas. They brought us here. But actually, we don’t know where we are but this minute, I want to beg on CAN, Christian Association of Nigeria because I am the only Christian among the six of us here. I want to beg that CAN should please do something about me to see how I can be released.

“I also want to beg the Action Against Hunger, Borno State. We are six here, all of us are staff, we went to work and we were caught on our way back from work. I beg ACF, we have families, and some of us have children. I am begging ACF that they should please do something that they will release us.

“I also want to count on Nigerians – our nation, we are Nigerians and we are also working for Nigerian. I beg that Nigerian Government should please. I am begging again please do something to see that we are released. Because this has occurred before in Red Cross where some ladies, Hauwa and Deborah were caught.

“They also asked to be released but because Nigeria did not do anything about it, they were killed. I am begging on behalf of all of us here that Nigerian should not allow such a thing to happen to us.

”It also happened again with Leah and Alice and because Nigeria could not do anything about them, they were not released. They were killed. I beg that Nigeria and our Organisation Action Against Hunger should do something and see that we are released.”

Galma River Valley, Wucciciri village in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State, is now a dark spot.

This is the aftermath of tragic and mysterious deaths of nine girls. They lost their lives on July 15, 2019, while being ferried across the river.

Their deaths brought back memories of different sad stories about the river and the suspicion about the river. A fisherman, Mallam Bala Salihu, familiar with the tales of the river, told Daily Sun that the river has become a path of death for innocent passengers, especially women and young girls, many of whom had met their untimely deaths crossing the river:

“Many girls have lost their lives while trying to cross this river to the other side, anytime from 6:00pm. That is why we always advise them not to crossover without any man inside the canoe. I was born and brought up here, but honestly, I don’t trust this river. I remember my parents used to tell me not to go close to the river at night.

“That is why I make efforts to keep away from the river at night. In fact, I do my fishing activity in the morning, sometimes up to afternoon, but not in the night.”

A farmer in the village, Alhaji Ibrahim Suleiman, however insisted: “There is really nothing wrong with the river. Some people had over time developed a superstition around the river, suggesting that there were spirits in the river.”

He argued that fuelled by this unfounded belief, some people, hiding in the curtains of the night, perform various forms of rituals on the banks of the river:

“All these created a fitting impression of evil about the village river.

“Yes, there were lost of lives in the past, but certainly not through a canoe mishap. I remember that some girls died last two years and another set of women was drowned a few months after. This is the only time they were dealing with a canoe mishap or accident.”

Fatima Idris is one of the village girls who survived the accident. She still cannot afford to erase the sad memory of the fateful day when she thought her world had ended:

“It was on Friday, July 15, 2019, around 6 pm, while we were returning from a village called Hayin Sarkin Fito. It was a rainy night, with dark heavy storms. But we were determined to get home. The 16 of us decided to board a canoe to the other side of the river.

“At first, we paddled steadily. Then suddenly, as we were in the middle of the river, the canoe began to shake and sink. It was clear that we were going down and we were all afraid.

“And as there was nothing to starve off the impending tragedy, seven of us jumped out and swam with all our strength. The nine, who remained in the canoe died. We screamed for help, but nobody was near or could hear our shrilling cries. Because of the rain and the thick darkness that enveloped that night.

“But God was wonderful, extremely wonderful. Somehow, we were ferried by then same water to safety and we found ourselves out of danger.” She said although the level of rain was not enough to cause the mishap, it was surprising that they sank the way they did: “The operators of the canoe themselves were experts having done the same thing for years.”

The Village Head of Tudun Iya, Alhaji Muhammadu Musa, recalled that the incident was a big tragedy in the community as six of their daughters, who were on the verge of getting married, were killed in the mishap. He said they retrieved five bodies, and the following day, three additional bodies were recovered at Kaku village.

The last of the deceased girls was recovered at Garu Rubuchi, some five kilometres away from the spot of the incident. The deceased were immediately buried according to Islamic rites. He advised canoe operators to always put safety consideration first and avoid the unwholesome culture of overloading their canoes with passengers simply for monetary gains.

Chairman, Zaria Local Government, Aliyu Idris, expressed sympathies to the families of the bereaved and prayed Allah to grant them the fortitude to bear the losses. He assured the survivors that the council would endeavour to assist them.

In his condolence visit, member representing Zaria City Constituency, Alhaji Suleiman Wakili, donated two brand new canoes to the community to ease the difficulties they face traveling across the river.

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, yesterday, lamented that Nigeria loses $14 billion annually to farmer-herder clashes, saying it may affect the country’s ability to guarantee food security for the people.

He said:

“Nigeria loses $14 billion annually to farmer-herder clashes, a development that may also have devastating effects on the country’s ability to guarantee food security for the people.”

He also hinted that the rate at which farmer-herders conflicts worsen in recent times requires a decisive action by the government to unpack what has become a major threat to peaceful co-existence and food security in the country.

Fayemi said this at the National Institute for Security Studies, NISS, Executive Management Course in Abuja, while delivering a paper titled Farmer-Herder Conflicts in Nigeria: Implications for National Security.

The governor said:

“As political and policymakers, we must be humble enough to admit that the messaging around the farmer-herder crisis, in terms of being mindful of sensitivities and the use of polarizing terminologies and concepts leaves room for improvement.

“From the evolution of the discourse on major issues such as the anti-grazing laws which have been passed into law in Ekiti, Benue and Taraba states, to colonies, the Ruga settlement phenomenon, the ranching options, we have not done enough to properly manage the various narratives or interpretations that emerged from this problem.

“Had government at all levels accorded due priority to the right messaging and perceptions in these sensitive issues, the often useful ideas proposed to resolve the problems would not have been subjected to blatant misinterpretation and politicization.”

While emphasizing that the farmer-herder conflict has become a threat to sub-regional and continental peace and stability, Fayemi, said a similar problem is prevalent in some West African countries, leading to the adoption of a Regional Transhumance Policy as far back as 1998.

He also cautioned against demonizing one ethnic group by the others, saying that such could lead to socio-cultural implications, including increasing distrust among the ethnic groups.

Fayemi said:

“Transhumance across our national borders is an inevitable occurrence and has been in place even before the adoption of the 1978 ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods.”

Talking about his album which will be released tomorrow and his music in an interview with Billboard, the Rivers State born singer said his plan is to take his music worldwide and also play in a stadium in China.

But first, he’ll embark on a 17-date global tour of 1,000- to 3,000-capacity venues starting Aug. 9 in Toronto.

“This has always been my vision, “Not like I planned it, just that I knew I should stick to doing what I’m doing. It’s almost like climbing steps — you keep going up.”

Also speaking on his local growth, Burna Boy stated that Nigerians only acknowledge him now because the rest of the world does.

The Jasper Ndubuaku-led Imo State Committee on the Recovery of Moveable Assets belonging to the State Government, have made a breakthrough on their job.

Acting on a tip off, the team discovered a massive warehouse Friday afternoon.

The facility, located along Aba Road, is alleged to be belonging to Nkechi, wife of former Governor, Rochas Okorocha.

Okorocha is now the senator representing Imo West Senatorial district.

The Management of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public, especially consumers of animal hides, popularly known as ‘Ponmo’ in local parlance on the activities of some unscrupulous business men and traders who are selling industrial animal hides as food article.

A statement issued by NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Moji Christianah Adeyeye, said as far back as 2015, following intelligence reports, the Agency, through Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, had been successfully dealing with isolated cases of dangerous diversion of animal hides meant for industrial use into the food chain for consumption as local delicacy, Ponmo, saying this practice posed grave danger to public health.

“Investigations revealed that some of the companies legally imported hides from countries such as Lebanon and Turkey, while majority of the product was smuggled into the country through the porous borders.

“These imported animal hides are meant for industrial use by leather industries for the manufacture of items such as shoes, bag, belt etc.

“The hides, therefore,are pre-treated with industrial chemicals which are not of food grade and will be toxic and injurious to human health.

“Health hazards inherent in the consumption of such animal hides include risk of Liver, Kidney and Heart damage, increased risk of Aplastic anaemia, Central nervous system toxicity, Cancer, etc.

“Live stock farmers are also to note that industrial animal hides can also not be used to manufacture animal feed, as the associated chemicals will be stored in the tissues of these animals and will eventually end up in humans when consumed with the attendant deleterious effects listed above,”

She said.

According to Adeyeye,

“The general public is hereby encouraged to be very vigilant and exercise discretion when purchasing animal hides ponmo and indeed other food items. NAFDAC is fully alive to her responsibilities of assuring the safety, wholesomeness and quality of processed foods offered for sale to the public.

“In this regard, the Agency, has increased the tempo of targeted and aggressive routine (unannounced) inspections to monitor activities of animal hide merchants to ensure that only food grade animal hide (PONMO) is sold as food article in our markets.”

The police have arrested five persons in connection with the shooting and killing of an Okada rider in Ikere Ekiti on Thursday evening.

The Okada man was allegedly hit by bullets during a traditional dancing conducted by the wife of Ogoga of Ikere and the Paramount ruler of the town, Oba Adejimi Adu in preparation for Odun Oba festival slated for today (Saturday).

According to a police source, the traditional dancing procession was conducted amid shooting, which allegedly led to the stray bullets that hit two motorcyclists and one of them died immediately.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

“When killing like that happened, once we knew where the shooting allegedly emanated, it is normal for us to make arrest, so it is true.

“The offence becomes more severe when you carried prohibited firearms, as it was in this case. The arrest should be expected”.

When the incident, which caused commotion in the town occurred, people thought it was a fight between Ogoga’s supporters and his rival, the Olukere of Ikere, Oba Ganiyu Obasoyin.

But speaking on Friday, Oba Obasoyin denied his involvement in the crisis, saying he and his supporters were never involved in the incident.

The monarch added that he had already spoken to his people to be calm in spite of the highly provocative shooting in the town on Thursday.

“The whole town knew where to he shooting emanated from, we are not involved at all. Some people were dancing round the town and shooting when they shot the dead and the injured man.

“We are doing our best as leaders to ward off crisis. We were engaging our people on the need to embrace peace but some people are jittery.

“The issue has nothing to do with Olukere and Ogoga. We are happy that the killers have been arrested.

“I appeal to the police to do their job. They should do a just job. They shouldn’t allow the matter to be swept under the carpet”.

A member of the Okada riders’ association in the town, Mr. Jide Amos, who was an eyewitness established that the man was killed by stray bullets from the dancers.

He said men of Swift Operation Squad, SOS ,acting on credible information stormed GRA to trail these armed robbers who had perfected plans to rob a new generation bank along Birabi Street, but were intercepted and that on sighting the police, engaged them in a cross fire and that in return three of the robbers were shot dead.

Omoni explained that two AK-47 rifles were recovered during the operation.

Desperate efforts to bring into Nigeria 126.95 kilograms of cocaine and skunk concealed in herbal tea packs and imported vehicles by drug cartels from Brazil and Canada have again been thwarted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, AIIA, Enugu and the Tincan seaport in Lagos.

At the Enugu airport, an Ethiopian Airline male passenger, Eze Christian Ikenna, 42, coming from Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was intercepted on arrival at the airport at about 12:30pm on Friday 20th January. A search of his two bags revealed 19 big sachets which he claimed to contain herbal tea but were later found to be cocaine weighing 16.20 kilograms.

In the same vein, a joint examination carried out on a container marked TCLU 7799237 from Montreal, Canada at Sifax Okota Bonded Terminal by NDLEA operatives attached to Tincan Command of the Agency on Wednesday 18th January led to the discovery of 110.75kgs of cannabis Indica concealed in two of the four vehicles in the container: a 2011 Toyota Sienna and a 2011 Honda Pilot SUV.

Deliberate efforts to cut access to illicit opioids by the Agency again paid off on Tuesday when a consignment of Tramadol NDLEA operatives have been tracking for some months was eventually traced to a warehouse at Greenfield estate, Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos. When the store was opened, a total of One Million Six Hundred and Forty Five Thousand Five Hundred and Sixty (1,645,560) pills of Tramadol 100mg, 200mg and 225mg were recovered.

Another 60,000 pills of Tramadol 250mg were equally recovered from a wanted drug dealer, Diugwu Alphonsus in Bariga area of the state same day while raids carried out in Akala area of Mushin on Wednesday 18th and Friday 20th January led to the recovery of 781.7kgs of cannabis.

In Osun state, NDLEA officers on Friday 20th Jan. took into custody a blind 67-year-old grandpa, Aliyu Adebiyi, in whose house they found 234 kilograms of cannabis at Sokoto village, Owena Ijesa, Atakumosa East LGA. In his statement, he said a drug dealer kept the consignment with him for a fee of N6,000 per month and paid for three months upfront.

Similarly, a leper notorious for drug dealing, Haruna Abdullahi, 45, was arrested at Garko town, Kano on Thursday 19th Jan. while 2.2kgs of cannabis and various quantities of Diazepam and Exol were recovered from him.

No less than 370kgs of cannabis were recovered from a sawmill at Ilale, Owo in Ondo State when operatives stormed the industrial plant following credible intelligence. In Edo state, 261 kilograms of the illicit substance were seized from a suspect, Uche Monday at Uneme-Osu, Ososo Road in Akoko Edo area of the state with another 74kgs evacuated from a bush at Okpela fertiliser community in Etsako East LGA.

In Abuja, NDLEA operatives on Monday 16th January raided Lugbe area of the FCT based on credible intelligence that a dealer was operating in a batcher on the outskirt of the town. A search of the batcher led to the recovery of 42.9kgs cannabis, 15grams cocaine, 137grams Methamphetamine, and a cash of Two Million One Hundred and Forty Eight Thousand, Five Hundred Naira (N2,148,500) only, believed to be proceeds of the criminal trade.

While reacting to the seizures and arrests by the Lagos, AIIA, Tincan, Osun, Kano, Ondo, Edo and FCT Commands in the past week, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) CON, OFR, DSS commended all the officers involved in the operations and charged them and their compatriots across the country to remain steadfast and focused on winning the war against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.

The Tigres Femenil team continues to show that it is the best team in Liga MX Femenil, this time after beating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the dispute for the Amazon Cup.

Tigres Femenil achieved victory against Bayern Munich in the Amazon Cup thanks to the goal of Uchenna Kanu.

The duel between the Mexican team and the German team was held at the University Stadium where about 34,500 spectators attended.

The match was developed with several scoring opportunities for both squads, however they could not consolidate and with it the party was for the locals.

The show was guaranteed because it brought together the team of the second position of the women's Bundesliga, against the second team of the Liga MX Femenil.

Malleri in Kwami LGA of Gombe State is an agrarian community located about 60 kilometres in the North Eastern part of Gombe town.

Our correspondent who visited the community reports the concerns of residents over incessant hippopotamus attacks on their farmlands.

A 60-year-old farmer, Abubakar Alhaji, alongside his children, was clearing his farm on the banks of the Dadin-Kowa River for dry season farming, hoping to recover the losses he recorded during the rainy season following floods that ravaged his farms.

He explained that as he was recovering from the flood losses, a bloat of hippos invaded his farms and destroyed the remnants of crops and other plantations that survived the floods.

He said, “We used to experience flooding occasionally on our farms, but last year’s was the worst. I suffered great losses on my five farms where I planted rice and sorghum from flooding and hippos.

“Hippos usually ravage our farms. The government has banned us from killing them. We see them destroying our crops but the government has warned us about killing or harming them.

“In the past, the hippos grazed in the night, but these days we see them in daylight roaming on our farms and destroying crops.”

On his part, Malam Sa’idu Mohammed (54), a vegetable farmer, said apart from the hippo attacks and floods, they lacked farm implements and inputs during dry season farming.

He said, “Apart from onion, pepper, tomato and other vegetables, I also plant beans. But last year, we didn’t get fertiliser and other farm inputs.

“Also, because of the sharp increase in the price of diesel, we couldn’t power our machines to water the farmlands. We had to abandon vegetable farming and plant beans which can easily grow near the river.

“But after struggling to plant the bean, floods and hippos destroyed our farms. Now, most of us don’t have food in our houses; being subsistence farmers.”

Malam Mohammed, therefore, said, “We are really in need of help to be able to feed our families and attend to our other needs.”

When our reporter met Malam Babawuro Magaji (53) on his farm on the outskirts of Malleri, he said he was into rice, watermelon, guinea-corn and maize farming.

He said, “We are used to flash floods, but last year it consumed farmlands in high-rise areas that we never expected it would reach. A lot of farms were destroyed after people spent huge sums of money cultivating them.

“We need government’s assistance to be able to be on our feet again because we lost all our investments on the farms to the flood.”

He, however, noted that: “Our other problem is hippos, and the only option is for us to stay on the farms to protect them and prevent the animals from trespassing and destroying our crops.”

The Chairman of the Malleri Rice Farmers Association (MRFA), Alhaji Sarki, complained that the hippos last year destroyed several hectares of rice in Malleri and neighbouring villages.

He said, “The hippos destroyed my farms. We planted rice hoping to recover the losses we recorded from the floods but the hippos invaded in the night and finished everything.”

Sarki explained that they encircled their farmlands with prickles and thorns as a temporary measure to prevent the hippos from crossing into the farmlands.

He said, “The fear of attacks from the hippos is what delayed us from planting the rice. They now invade the farms even in the afternoon. I have lost over three hectares.

“After the rains subsided, I planted again, yet the hippos destroyed it too. I lost my investment in three farms worth over N300,000.

“I also planted wheat but when it started to flourish, the hippos came in the night and consumed all the plants.

“As you can see them (pointing to the bloat of hippos in the river); they are waiting for us to leave the farms and they will come out and invade and destroy our crops.

“So, in addition to money spent to get good seedlings, fertiliser and other farm implements. Now, we have to engage the services of vigilantes to protect the farms.”

Sarki decried that the government had failed to protect them from the frequent hippo attacks.

Another farmer, Uzairu Ali (30), said, “We now pay vigilantes daily to protect our farms. We are paying at least N1,000 on each farm daily. We don’t have an option but to pay because one problem with the hippos is that even if they don’t eat anything on the farms, by merely passing through them they destroy whatever is planted.

“The hippo attacks were more severe last year because of the flood. Because the river was flooded the hippos were left with no option than to cross over to our farms in search of food. So, in broad daylight the hippos invaded the farms.”

He noted that were it not for the hippos, they could have recovered the losses they recorded from the flood.

He said, “Even though we suffered losses during the rainy season because of the flooding, had it been there was no threat of the hippos, we could have recovered the losses. The hippos’ threat is big and we fear greater losses are looming if adequate care is not taken.”

Ali, therefore, appealed for assistance from the government to engage the services of rangers to protect their farms.

Govt to establish hippo colony

When contacted, Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director General of Press Affairs to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, said the state government was aware and working to address the hippo issue in Malleri village and other communities along the Dadin-Kowa River in Funakaye, Kwami and Yamaltu/Deba LGAs.

He said although the affected farmlands were under the purview of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority (UBRBDA), the state government was ready to address any issue affecting indigenes and other residents of the state.

Misilli said, “We have taken conscious steps towards finding a lasting solution to this issue to ensure that humans and hippos cohabit peacefully.

“Because the hippopotamus are endangered species, officials of the state government in May, 2022, met with Dr Lynne Baker, a United States-based conservation biologist and some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) on how to establish a hippopotamus colony in the state.”

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have unraveled a cluster of cannabis syndicates operating in the Opuje forests in Edo state where massive warehouses and tents storing over 317,417 kilograms (317.4 metric tons) of the psychoactive substance were destroyed and set ablaze in a two-day operation, IGBERETV reports.

In a statement released, the spokesperson of the antidrug agency, Femi Babafemi, said a suspect, Omoruan Theophilus, 37, who parades himself as a Police Inspector to convey the drugs from the forests to the cities and three others identified as Aigberuan Jacob, 42; Ekeinde Anthony Zaza, 53, and Naomi Patience Ohiewere, 42, were arrested in connection with the drugs.

"The Opuje community in Owan West Local Government Area, Edo State, is notorious for cannabis cultivation, where the cartels invest huge resources, cutting down economic trees of the forest reserves and cultivating cannabis on a large scale, running into hundreds of hectares.

After harvest, they build warehouses inside the forest reserves and employ the services of armed youths to protect the warehouses 24/7.

Accessing the forest on Wednesday 18th January took hours of trekking by hundreds of NDLEA operatives who were ambushed with bonfire by armed youths on their way out of the community the following day but were able to successfully leave the area without any casualty except the heavy investment losses inflicted on the cartels".

Also, the Agency on Thursday January 19th acted on intelligence received from the Drug Enforcement Administration of the United States and busted a criminal syndicate involved in the trafficking of fake USD currency in Lagos.

"During a combined operation carried out by NDLEA operatives with their EFCC colleagues, a total of $269,000 counterfeit US dollars were recovered from the syndicate at Oniru Shoprite area of Lekki, Lagos, where three suspects were arrested" he stated

The agency directed that the fake dollars recovered and suspects arrested in the Lekki operation be immediately transferred to the EFCC for possible prosecution.
